Select a UPS
An Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) is an important component for maintaining the operational stability and data integrity of your IPCs running IntrinsicOS.
A UPS provides power conditioning and emergency backup power. This protects critical hardware components by offering overvoltage protection and enabling the system to safely shut down during a power failure.
Connecting a UPS to your IPC is recommended, but it is not a hard requirement to run solutions in production environments built with Flowstate.
UPS requirements:
To select the right UPS for your IPC, you need to consider the following factors:
- A shutdown of IntrinsicOS can take up to 90 seconds in the worst case.
- Depending on your IPC Tier, the power consumption can be up to 600W.
- Availability of dry contacts on the UPS to signal when the UPS is on battery.
- Availability of USB or network interfaces on the UPS to communicate with the IPC.
Based on the aforementioned factors, we recommend a UPS with at least 800VA with 0.8 efficiency (equal to 800W) or more than 1500VA with less efficiency.
Select a shutdown trigger:
To safely shut down an IPC with IntrinsicOS via a UPS, there are two options:
- Trigger shutdown via a remote power switch (hardware-based).
- Trigger shutdown via a USB/Network connection (software-based).
The first approach has the benefit that it works with any UPS that has dry contacts to signal when the UPS is on battery, if the IPC has a remote power switch. But it requires additional hardware, specifically a Mono-Stable Timer Relay.
The second approach works with any IPC; only a free USB port or network connection is required. While USB is available on most UPS models, a network interface might only be available by installing an additional management card.
Recommended UPS:
The following UPS has been tested and verified to work with IntrinsicOS:
- APC SMTL1000RM2UC Smart-UPS, Line Interactive, 1000VA, Lithium-ion
